First by opening the ´copy´ worksheet of CS2Data1 in GenStat (i.e. leaving the ´raw data´ sheet intact), defining HDGRP, HERD and LACNO as factors and using Spread → Restrict/Filter → To Groups (factor levels)… with LACNO set to 2, we can restrict the dataset to the 388 cows in their second or subsequent lactation.

We shall first explore the variation in LACLEN, the length of lactation. The Graphics → Histogram … command results in the histogram shown. The histogram is slightly skewed to the right with one cow having a lactation as short as approximately 125 days. The median lactation length is about 225 days.
